Have you ever taught young learners online? If you have, you’re probably aware of how hard it can be sometimes to keep them focused during an online lesson. Even in an offline classroom, it is not always easy to do so. But when your young learner is taking a lesson online, they may have even more reasons to be distracted.

Have you ever taught young learners online? If you have, you’re probably aware of how hard it can be sometimes to keep them focused during an online lesson. Even in an offline classroom, it is not always easy to do so. But when your young learner is taking a lesson online, they may have even more reasons to be distracted.

So here are some tips that should help you keep the attention of your young students when you’re teaching online.

⏱ Work with breaks

Breaks are almost as vital as teaching parts in that they keep students' attention and allow them to recover from and refocus on the learning segments. Check-in with your students individually if possible to ensure that they are all on task and comprehend the material. Breaks and check-in points are essential for keeping your student focused during online classes.

🗣 Ensure that everyone is involved

You should try to involve all of your students in your classroom activities. Talk to all of the students and use their names when addressing them. This will prevent certain learners from feeling left out.

✍️ Give students a physical task

Try to give them a break from staring at the screen and performing activities online. You can ask them to prepare flashcards or do a written assignment where they would use a pen or pencil (not their keyboard). This will provide your students with a change of activity and help to keep them focused and engaged.
